Posh complex hit by B’wood’s ‘rowdy’ bug

It’s unusually quiet, for a Sunday afternoon at least. The sprawling housing colony, Green Acres at Lokhandwala, however I’m told, will soon go “rowdy” with a new denizen. Rowdy not literally of course, because he’s quite soft-spoken in real life, but because the success of the brain-basher Rowdy Rathore has made him prime hot property in showbiz.
That’s the boneless dance wonder, Prabhu Deva, who also directed the other brain-banger Wanted, and is now considered the perfect candidate to helm Hindi remakes of Tamil and Telugu hits. Tired of staying in hotels during his visits from Chennai to Mumbai, Deva is scheduled to move into the apartment that Boney Kapoor and Sridevi inhabited for over a decade. Since quite a while now, the producer and Sridevi, with their two daughters, have moved to a bungalow. Their apartment was vacant, and so, enter a tenant, who will probably stay there for years or skedaddle, depending on his future scores at the box-office.
Now, why am I giving you tinsel gup? Not my scene. It’s just that last weekend I was at a Lokhandwala friend’s. And the talk kept veering towards Prabhu Deva’s imminent relocation in the neighbourhood. Tabu stays in Green Acres, too, but maintains such a low profile that the Lokhandwalas wonder if she has shifted to her birthtown, Hyderabad. No, no, she hasn’t, a know-all interjected, she will soon be seen in Life of Pi, and a film called David.
How about changing the topic guys? I pleaded. No way. Lokhandwala is the hub of movie stars and wannabes, and even if my friends are investment bankers, they’ve been bitten by the Bollywood bug. Mrs Investment Banker next went on to inform all of us guests, on our first beers, that Prabhu Deva went through an acrimonious separation from his wife Ramlath and kids. Reason: a liaison with actress Nayantara. The incorrigibly curious Mrs Banker had even Googled to find out the current status of the actor-choreographer-director’s life, but was perplexed. “Maybe this girl will be with him at Green Acres, maybe not. They have broken up, but then you can never be sure,” she chattered on. “Anyway who cares? I hate all this film gossip.” Huh? Really. Be it Lokhandwala or NRIs in London, movie gossip is as addictive as the morning newspapers. So okay, all eyes are on Prabhu Deva’s transition from Chennai to Bollywood. Green Acres will remain placid on Sunday afternoons, but I suspect the tabloids will have a lush field day. Way to psst psst!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
