New rakes to be differently coloured to camouflage paan stains
With a view to enhance the appearance of the new rakes coming to the city, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has asked the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad to choose a colour scheme that will help hide paan stains.
The MRVC has awarded a fresh consultancy to the NID for designing the appearance and colour scheme of the 72 new rakes that are slated to arrive in the city next year. MRVC sources said the NID has been asked to choose colours like old reddish brown and yellow to camouflage the stains. “The shades should be such that they hide the stains to a large extent,” said an MRVC official.
The paan stains on the external body of coaches have always been a major problem. Several methods have been tried to keep the rakes clean, but to no avail. Even the three stage washing that coaches undergo — first with plain water, then with soap and water and finally wiped down — have proved futile. However, paan stains, dust and grim that settle on these coaches don’t come off even after this cleaning.
The problem is predominantly observed in the white and purple trains currently running on the both Central and Western lines of the city, as the light colour of these trains show up the stains easily.
