NCP is 1st party with women’s wing
On its thirteenth anniversary on Sunday, the Nationalist Congress Party became the first national party to have a separate party wing for young women. Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, will lead the Nationalist Yuvati Congress.
“Whether it will strengthen the NCP or not, I do not know. But it will certainly help young women in the state get an opportunity to participate in the decision-making process,” said the NCP president, in the inaugural function of the NYC in Mumbai.
On the occasion, MP Supirya Sule under whose leadership the NYC will work, said that it was a gift from the party to the party President Pawar, who has always strived for the cause of giving equal rights to women.
Ms Sule expressed concerned over the falling sex ratio of girls to boys, especially amongst the educated masses. Citing the example of the Nandurbar district. Ms Sule said, “The state has always tried to be at the top when it comes to development. We should follow the example of Nandurbar and have a positive sex ratio.”
Amongst other things, the new wing will be taking up issues such as prevention of female feticide, providing higher education to girls, having more hostels for women, curbing dowry deaths etc. “The NYC will be a good organisation for women which would not only strengthen the party, but will also have an independent existence,” said Ms Sule
