Narco cops back on their beat
Senior anti-narcotics cell officers who were deployed for bandobast duty at the MMRDA ground, have been withdrawn from this task. They will now start working on drug trafficking cases, which are on the rise in the wake of the New Year celebrations.
Barring a couple of officers and constables, the assistant commissioner of police of the ANC along with three police inspectors and three sub-inspectors were posted on bandobast duty at the MMRDA ground.
Officers had claimed that during December party revellers buy contraband from vendors to celebrate the New Year. However, the officers’ investigations were being affected as they were not able to perform their core task. This newspaper had reported this in its Wednesday’s edition.
However on Wednesday, the ANC officers were taken off the bandobast duty. “We have worked out a plan and we will be working accordingly to bust narcotics trade in the city,” said a senior officer of the ANC. Incidentally, the police too cut down its deployment by over 50 per cent on Wednesday. “Only policemen from Zone 8, under whose jurisdiction the ground is, have been deployed for security. We have withdrawn the security from other units,” said Nisar Tamboli, PRO for the Mumbai police.
