Murder accused who Escaped cops caught
The police on Monday finally caught an undertrial who had escaped from a municipal hospital in Vashi on March 9. Hanumant S. Patil (24) alias Prem had been arrested along with four others for allegedly murdering Cidco clerk Atul Mhatre (35) over a real estate issue. Patil had hoodwinked jail guards and escaped through the toilet by climbing down the drainpipe.
Senior police inspector Raosaheb Sardesai of Vashi police said, “We caught him from Taloja where he had come to visit a person for Akshaya Tritiya. A trap, also involving officers of the Panvel police was laid after we received a tip-off of his whereabouts. He has been arrested under Section 223 (escape from confinement of custody) and 224 (resistance for unlawful apprehension) of the IPC.” Patil, who was then arrested by the Panvel police for the murder, had been taken to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Hospital for a medical check-up after he complained of “severe stomach ache.” Following the escape, the Vashi police had registered a case against him.
On March 9, Patil, accompanied by two jail guards, was taken to the male ward on the second floor and was kept in a room, which had an attached toilet. Patil said he had to go the bathroom and was allowed to do so. Once inside the toilet, he removed the windowpane and jumped onto a ledge below from where he climbed down a pipe.
Patil was the prime accused in the murder of Mhatre, a clerk with the Cidco, who was found dead on February 10 with 42 stab injuries. He had gone missing two days before he was killed.
