Multi-storey garage planned for police
The motor transport department of the Mumbai police is planning to build a multi-storey car park and garage at its existing facility at Nagpada. A proposal has been sent for architectural approval to the public works department (PWD), after which it will be forwarded to Mantralaya. The idea is to decongest the road outside its current repair facility in Nagpada and introduce modern repair and overhaul machinery.
The MT department is in-charge of procuring and maintaining all police jeeps and other cars assigned to senior IPS officers. The garage and workshop is located near the Nagpada police station on the Sofia Zuber Road. At any given point, around 80 cars and other police vehicles can be found inside the workshop undergoing repairs. “The entire lane is mostly occupied by police cars that takes up most of the parking space. This has further narrowed the already narrow lane. The multi-storey car park will be the first such facility introduced by the Maharashtra police. We will be at par with other leading car manufacturers,” said a police source.
The MT department has other workshops in Worli, Santa Cruz, Ghatkopar and Marol. DCP (MT) Atul Patil confirmed the development, but said it was too premature to comment as the plan was in the nascent stage. The police also plans to buy forklifts, car lift and vehicle elevator systems if the project is approved. “The architectural section of the PWD will approve the drawings of the plan and will draw up an
estimation. It will then be forwarded to the PWD office in Mantralaya,” explained the police source.
