More CCTVs for Expressway?
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway might soon see extensive surveillance camera cover on the 95-kilometre stretch if a plan conceptualised by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) sees fruition.
The organisation is collaborating with the Pune-based Science and Technology Park, a Central government institute, to install high-definition cameras on crucial spots to identify traffic offenders.
MSRDC chief engineer A.V. Deodhar said, “An administrative approval has been given to the plan. The STP will soon submit us a pre-feasibility report on the project, which will outline all technical, infrastructural and financial aspects of the project. It is roughly estimated to cost around `40 crore but the expenditure will only be determined after the report is submitted. The STP has undertaken other such works in the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune municipal corporations.”
The cameras will be connected to a control room, which will be manned by personnel from the traffic police, MSRDC, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the emergency response service Delta Force. “Tentatively, we have identified seven spots on the highway where the cameras could be installed but are waiting for the report which will have the final blueprint. Cars violating traffic rules will be stopped and fined at the next toll plaza by traffic police and RTO personnel,” Mr Deodhar said.
On Thursday morning, two employees of the Ideal Road Builders (IRB) were killed at Khandala when their truck collided with another lorry. Five other IRB personnel sustained injuries out of which one was critical.
The same morning, an LPG tanker toppled near Khopoli after the driver lost control, which caused the gas to leak. Traffic was closed on the Expressway for the next five hours for precautionary measures until the leak was contained.
