Milan flyover eases monsoon nightmare
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Authority’s (MMRDA) interactions with commuters have revealed that the Milan Flyover in Santa Cruz has proved to be quite useful after all, as thousands of motorists have been using it without complains ever since the road over the bridge was thrown open on May 25, 2013.
“The seven-minute east-west connectivity provided by the Milan flyover has eased the commute,” said MMRDA, in a statement, quoting the positive response received by the MMRDA team that spoke to a few motorists plying on the Milan flyover. “The Milan subway is a low-lying area and would present water-logging problems every monsoon, causing major traffic chaos. But, now we are very happy to use the new flyover,” said Aakash Chandra, an executive working with a bank, to the MMRDA. He also added that the drive between the Western Express Highway and SV Road took only seven minutes.
It is notable that this 700-metre long flyover provides two lanes each for Up and Down traffic, and connects the eastern and western suburbs, saving time, fuel and vehicle operating costs besides controlling pollution levels.
“Suburban rails divide our city into eastern and western suburbs and necessitates Milan-like flyovers to provide quick connectivity for motorists. After the Burfiwala flyover, the Milan flyover has proved to be a boon easing the motorists’ life,” said Anil Dani, a resident of Vile Parle.
“The Milan Flyover is indeed a success story. I think, it is a classic example of coordination between various government agencies such as MMRDA, Railways, BMC and traffic police,” said Dilip Kawathkar, joint project director (PR), MMRDA.
