Mathadi union leader stabbed to death
A 42-year-old Mathadi union leader was stabbed to death by an assailant in Nerul on Monday night. Balasaheb Chowdhary was stabbed in the chest with a sharp weapon as many as 28 times. The police suspects the involvement of one of Chowdhary’s former associates in the crime. No arrest has been made so far.
According to the police, Chowdhary, a resident of Nerul, went out for some work around 10.30 pm when he was attacked by a man near the Sea Woods flyover. The killer stabbed him several times injuring him critically. He was rushed to DY Patil Hospital in Nerul, where doctors declared him dead. A case of murder was then registered in the NRI police station against one Vikash Auti, who is one of Chowdhary’s former associates and a prime suspect in the case.
“Nerul resident Auti, who used to work in the same union that Chowdhary led, is suspected to be involved in the crime, as some people who were present at the spot saw him running away from the crime scene. Three teams were formed to search him,” said an officer.
There had been rifts between Chowdhary and Auti after he was thrown out of the union around a year ago. Both had registered police complaints against each other on several occasions. But Chowdhary’s relatives have reportedly told the police that there were a few more people behind the murder who were linked with big political figures, and used Auti’s enmity to eliminate Chowdhary. They also claimed that he was being threatened by some other union leaders for the last several months. They had even damaged his car in an attack six months ago.
“A few people have been detained on the basis of suspicion for interrogation. The investigation is on and we hope to get good lead on culprits soon,” said Ahmad Pathan, senior police inspector of the NRI police station.
