Man trying to smuggle gold bars arrested
An Indian passenger was arrested by customs officials at the international airport with gold bars and international currency collectively worth `24.02 lakh. The passenger, identified as Feroze Alam Ansari, was travelling from Istanbul in Turkey. According to the customs, this is the first such case on the route.
Ansari landed from a Turkish Airways flight at around 5 am on Sunday and proceeded towards the green channel, where he was apprehended. “We were suspicious of his movement and body language. After we was asked him to step aside for interrogation, we discovered four gold bars, weighing 100 grams each concealed in his jeans’ pockets,” said assistant commissioner Sameer Wankhede. The bars were worth `13.30 lakh alone. In addition to this, $25,000 was found in his handbag.
He was detained after he said that he had gone to Turkey for a business deal involving embroidery products. “He said that he had received some money in the deal, part of which he converted to gold, and the remaining into US dollars. He is a frequent flyer, which is indicated by his passport. He travels to Turkey once in every 25 days,” said airport customs commissioner P.M. Saleem. Ansari was arrested for smuggling under the Customs Act and was released on bail.
