Man sodomises, strangulates 8-yr-old, held
An eight-year-old boy was sodomised and later strangulated to death, allegedly by a 35-year-old construction worker on Wednesday night in Pune. The accused lured him with chocolates and treats. The body was found in Kadachiwadi at Chakan early on Thursday during a search operation when the boy failed to return home. The accused, who hails from Hamidpur in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested by the police.
“The accused, Khadak Singh Panchal, has been working at the site for the last one-and-a-half years and lived alone in the same premises. On Wednesday, the victim was playing with his friends and was left behind. The accused promised to give him treats,” said police inspector Sushil Kadam of Chakan police station.
Parents and other neighbours launched a search operation after the child failed to return by 10 pm and also filed a missing person’s report at Chakan police station. The victim was later found in a nude state and bleeding from the mouth at an under-construction site at around 1.30 am on Thursday. “Following a complaint filed by the boy’s father, we registered an FIR and arrested Panchal,” added Mr Kadam.

Aftab Khan
Nashik, May 16
Traders in Nashik agitating against the LBT on Thursday tried to burn an effigy of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in protest. The police promptly arrested around 200 traders and foiled the proposed morcha.
Speaking to The Asian Age, traders’ leader Praful Sancheti said that they had called up all merchants and traders in the district. “We have appealed to all traders, even in villages, to close their shops and come to the city and participate in the proposed morcha on Saturday. This will ensure a district-level bandh and our morcha will comprise thousands of people,” Mr Sancheti said.
In the meantime, retailers continued to blackmarket the essential commodities in many areas of the city. Sugar was available at `50 per kg, while shortage of rice, wheat, dal and other grocery products could be felt in the city.
The wholesale markets in market yard, Ravivar Karanja, Main Road, Nashik road, Cidco, Panchavati and Satpur continued to remain closed on Thursday. Mr Sancheti said that a rasta roko would also be held on Friday. The Foodgrain Wholesale Traders’ Association, Deolali Merchant Association, Nashik Road Retail Cloth Merchant, Jewellers Association Motor Merchants, are also continuing their support to the strike.
