Man arrested for raping mentally-challenged lady

The Unit-2 of the crime branch has arrested Saidullah Mohammed Shafi Karanjikar (32) alias Liaqat, a driver from Raigad district for allegedly raping a 33-year-old mentally-challenged girl in the Grant Road area. The accused talked the woman into coming to a lodge on the pretext of making friends with her and then allegedly raped her.
He took the victim to the Firdos Guest House in Nagpada where he raped her. The case was detected under API Bhaskar Kadam, who nabbed the accused in Charnal Junction area of Dongri on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, the case was registered with the DB Marg police that is now awaiting medical reports from the Nagpada police.
According to the police, the girl was standing below her residence near Grant Road railway station at around 2 pm on Wednesday when the accused approached her. “He told her he wanted to know her well and be good friends, then asked her to follow him and took her to a lodge 15 minutes away. He later raped her on the promise of marrying her and let her go,” said senior PI Ajit Surve of the DB Marg police station.
Apparently, a family friend spotted the girl while she was heading towards the lodge with the accused, who then informed the girl’s father. The father then started searching for her in the area and ran into her while she was walking back from the lodge. He took her home in the evening and questioned her about her whereabouts when she narrated the incident. The family then approached the police late on Wednesday night and filed a complaint.
