Luxury train eyes domestic tourists

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Ltd has come up with yet another initiative to boost tourism, with the launch of “pay-for-one-and-your-companion-pays-50 per cent-offer” for Indian nationals travelling on Maharajas’ Express.

The offer will be valid during the coming festive season of Dussehra and Diwali for its four trips commencing on October 20 and 24, and November 11 and 24.
At present, foreign nationals account for the maximum number of passengers in luxury trains, and with this offer, the IRCTC believes that it will also attract domestic tourists. “It is true that most of the occupancy is of foreign nationals…We introduced the offer for domestic tourists,” said Pradip Kundu, spokesperson of the IRCTC.
The super luxury train will be operating on five itineraries — Treasures of India, Gems of India, Indian Splendour, Heritage of India and Indian Panorama. Out of the five, Heritage of India will commence from Mumbai. The itinerary for Heritage of India includes Mumbai, Ajanta, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Ranth-ambore, Agra and Delhi.
The Indian Panaroma will take tourists through Jaipur, Ranthambore national park, Taj Mahal in Agra, Khajuraho temples, the sacred city of Varanasi and Lucknow.
The lowest packages, which start at $3,580 (`1.95 lakh) per person in a deluxe cabin, will now cost $5,370 (`2.92 lakh) for two persons. The prices include meals, complimentary wines, spirits and beers, sightseeing with entrance fees, services of the tour director, onboard paramedics and 24 hour-valet service.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
