Kurla emerges as most vulnerable
With 16 flood-prone spo-ts, 13 landslide-prone areas, 13 seafront settlements and 94 dilapidated buildings, Kur-la (L ward) has emerged as the most vulnerable ward in the city in the BMC’s pre-monsoon survey.
The data compiled by the civic disaster management cell as part of its pre-monsoon preparedness shows that Ghatkopar (N), Sandhurst Road (B), Dadar (G/N) and Grant Road (D) continue to be the wards that are at risk to calamities. The vulnerability survey of civic wards was carried out on the basis of the number of flooding spots, landslide-prone areas, dilapidated buildings, and seafront settlements.
The data shows that wards in the island city have the most dilapidated buildings, while the suburbs contain more flooding spots and landslide-prone areas.
While Ghatkopar has eight flood-prone spots, 42 landslide prone areas, 50 dilapidated buildings, Shandhurst Road has five flooding spots and 91 dilapidated buildings.
According to the data, the highest number of landslide-prone areas are in Bhandup (S) ward, while Kurla has the maximum flooding spots (16) and dilapidated buildings (94), which includes cess, non-cess and municipal properties, too.
The survey was carried out to enable the civic machinery to take immediate measures during crisis time, depending on the vulnerability of the ward. The officials in the most vulnerable wards have been told to be on high alert during heavy rains,” said a senior civic official.
