Kidnapper, 1-yr-old killed under local
An unidentified man and a one-year-old girl, who he had kidnapped from outside the Borivali railway station, were killed after a speeding Borivali-bound local train knocked them down while he was trying to escape with her using the railway tracks between Borivali and Kandivali railway stations late on Friday night.
According to the Kasturba Marg police, the kidnapping was reported to them at around 9.30 pm by the victim’s mother. At around 10.10 pm, the Borivali government railway police (GRP) were alerted about the accidental deaths by the motorman.
The victim, Sandhya, was kidnapped just outside the Borivali railway station where her mother Rekha Chauhan (28) works as a hawker selling fruits. Sandhya had dirtied her clothes and Rekha had left her alone for a few minutes to fetch water to clean her up. During this time, the kidnapper lifted Sandhya in his arms and fled from the spot.
Rekha is a resident of Daulat Nagar and her husband passed away a year ago due to malaria. Rekha has two more children. While one is a five-year-old boy, the other is a three-year-old girl.
Without wasting any time, Rekha rushed to the Kasturba Marg police station, which is located a few metres away from the kidnapping spot. An FIR was registered in accordance with the recent circular where a case of kidnapping has to be promptly registered in case a minor is under 15 years of age.
An hour later, the GRP officials found their bodies with grievous head injuries along railway track no.1 in the Poisar area between Borivali and Kandivali railway stations. While investigating, the Kasturba Marg police got in touch with the Borivali GRP that informed them about the deaths. Rekha identified Sandhya during the early hours.
The unidentified man had probably danced in a Ganpati procession before committing the crime as he had pink powder spattered on his clothes, the police said.
Half his face had got mutilated making it difficult to recognise him. There was nothing found on him like a PAN card or a cellphone, which would have helped the police to ascertain his identity.
DNA samples of both the deceased have been taken to scientifically find out if the accused had sexually assaulted the victim and if he is involved in any of the cases where small girls have been raped and murdered before.
