Infant burnt in stove blast battling for life
A six-month-old girl from Satara, who sustained severe burn injuries in a stove blast last month, is currently battling for life at Masina Hospital in Byculla. Doctors at the hospital said that the infant has suffered third degree burns and her condition is “critical”. The toddler is the sole survivor of the family.
The incident took place around a month ago; the mother of the six-month-old Sanskruti was cooking in the kitchen when the stove suddenly blast. Sanskruti’s mother was caught in the flames. Her father, who tried to save her mother, too suffered severe burns. Meanwhile, her mother’s sari fell on her, and she sustained 25 per cent burns. The parents succumbed to the burn injuries, but the girl survived.
According to doctors at Masina Hospital, Sanskruti was brought in only on Monday. Prior to that, she had been getting treatment at a local hospital in Satara. “Her entire skull is burnt,” said Dr Sunil Abhyankar, plastic surgeon at Masina Hospital, who has been treating Sanskruti. “The-re were burns on her face as well, but they have somewhat healed now. There are burn injuries on her left thigh and legs too,” he said. However, it is not the burns alone that Sanskruti is dealing with. The burns have caused severe infection. “The baby is malnourished. That apart, she has chest infection, her haemoglobin is low and she is dehydrated. She has also been running a temperature,” said Dr Abhyankar.
Sanskruti’s grandmother has been tending to the girl.
Though the girl was referred to Masina Hospital for a constructive surgery, the doctors are currently concerned about stabilising her. “Right now, our priority is to save her vital organs. Once all her body functions are back to normal, we will be able to work on reconstructing her skin,” said Dr Abhyankar.
