Hunt on for men who assaulted jogger
The police has launched a massive manhunt for nabbing the accused involved in the mugging attempt on the 32-year-old female morning jogger at Marine Drive that took place early on Friday.
The south region of the city police has assigned one team from every police station, translating into 16 teams for working on the assault case, along with the theft case involving BMC additional commissioner Mohan Adtani’s cellphone.
Additional CP (south region) Krishna Prakash said, “There are 16 police stations in the south region and each has formed one team. There will be four officers in every team headed by a police inspector level officer.” The police is now scanning CCTV footage from the traffic police and is in the process of identifying the vehicle captured on the camera. “Habitual criminals in the region involved in chain-snatching, bike and cellphone theft are also being rounded up for questioning. The accused involved in similar crimes who have been recently released from prison are being interviewed,” Mr Prakash said.
Also, in a move to ensure safety of joggers, the number of patrolling policemen during the evenings and early mornings has been increased from two to four. However, the police has cited difficulty in
allotting officers for
patrol duties during these hours as this is the time when the policemen change duties.
“The officer on the day shift is relieved between 6 and 8 pm when the night officer takes over, and the latter ends his shift between 6 and 9 am. We are, however, trying to implement a smoother process of ending shifts so that the work doesn’t suffer,” said an officer. The plain clothed officers will also be posted at vulnerable spots.
