Hi-tech security for CR soon
The groundwork of the ambitious Integrated Security System (ISS) has started, with authorities completing the survey of prominent railway stations on the Central Railway (CR) network, which will be covered with hi-tech security apparatus within nine months.
“The survey of prominent stations in the city along with Pune and Miraj have been completed. The key security measure
will be to install 784 high resolution close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at six railway stations — CST, Dadar, Kurla, LTT, Thane and Kalyan,” Anil Sharma, inspector-
general and commissioner, safety, RPF, Central Railway told this newspaper.
The lack of security apparatus was exposed during the 26/11 terror attacks, in which two terrorists had indulged in indiscriminate firing at CST. The CR has appointed Nelco Ltd, a Tata group firm to implement the `25.25-crore project.
The company has surveyed the six stations and the equipment that will be installed are being checked by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
The old cameras will be replaced with new hi-tech ones. As per the plan, the existing 130 cameras
at CST will be replaced with 214 new ones, 31 cameras at Dadar will be replaced with 120 cameras, 32 at Kurla will re replaced with 46, 36 at LTT will be replaced with 200, 40 at Thane will be replaced with 114 and 50 cameras at Kalyan will be replaced with 90.
These high-resolution cameras can pick out unusual patterns or behaviour. Citing an example, Mr Sharma stated that if a baggage is left unattended for a long time, the cameras would alert the control room.
