Heritage list draft gets 3,000 queries
In a reflection of the growing awareness among citizens regarding the city’s heritage structures, the BMC has received over 3,000 suggestions and objections to the proposed heritage list draft.
The deadline for filing suggestions and objections came to an end on Saturday evening, informed civic officials, adding that the actual figure could go up after taking into account all modes including letters, emails and other correspondence. The initial deadline was September 30, but had to be extended to October 6, following unprecedented public demand.
The civic body had earlier kept the deadline for September 30, but following the growing public demand, it decided to extend it further till October 6. Speaking about the enormous response, municipal architect (heritage), Lalita Gupta said, “It may take around 10 days to count the total number of responses.”
“The response shows that there is a growing awareness among people about heritage issues. A review committee will now be appointed to scrutinise the suggestions and objections. It will also carry out hearings and a field study before taking a final call on the heritage list,” a senior civic official said.
The new draft list was compiled in 2005 and finalised in 2007.
The new draft proposes to include 947 new structures and 47 precincts, in addition to the existing 586 structures and 15 precincts.
