Govt shielding big players: Somaiya
Senior BJP leader Dr Kirit Somaiya on Monday alleged that the state government, instead of investigating the case of tainted PWD engineer Satish Chiklikar, was trying to protect the bigger players.
He alleged that the diary recovered from Chiklikar’s house by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had found names of several politicians and
bureaucrats. He also demanded that Central investigation agencies like Income Tax (I-T) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) be involved in the investigation.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Dr Somaiya criticised Raj Khilnani, director general of ACB, saying that he did not find that Mr Khilnani was probing the
matter seriously. The BJP leader said, “I am concerned with the light approach taken by the DG, ACB into the matter. I met him on Saturday and Khilnani himself told me that due to a crunch of officers in the department, he could not send any senior officer to Nashik to monitor the case.”
Dr Somaiya alleged that this could be an attempt to cover up the whole scandal, due to the involvement of high-profile people. He met home minister R.R. Patil and demanded that agencies like I-T and ED should work with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to unearth the scam.
“The case of minister of state for urban development Bhaskar Jadhav is an ideal example. The I-T has raided the premises of contractors, including the residence of the minister on the basis of reports that appeared in several newspapers regarding the lavish wedding of his son,” Dr Somaiya argued.
He questioned as to why the I-T department had not swung into action even after property worth `100 crore was recovered from the PWD engineer.
