Gov’s help sought for justice

A 10-member delegation of various political leaders and activists on Tuesday sought the Maharashtra governor’s intervention to bring the killers of renowned rationalist and activist Dr Narendra Dabholkar to justice.
A delegation comprising Prakash Ambedkar, N.D. Patil, MLC Kapil Patil and CPI’s Prakash Reddy met governor K. Sankaranarayanan at the Raj Bhavan, Mumbai, under the banner of Samyukta Nirdhar Parishad. The governor assured the delegation that he would discuss the issue with Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.
Complaining that the Maharashtra government had failed to trace and apprehend those responsible for Dr Dabholkar’s assassination even after 15 days, the delegation requested the governor to urge the government to institute a special inquiry into the matter. Mr Ambedkar also requested the governor to convene a special sitting of the state legislature to discuss the Anti-Superstition Bill, a Raj Bhavan spokesperson said. —PTI

Hc to javed, salim: Why don’t you settle the matter?
Age correspondent
Mumbai, Sept. 3

After the Bombay high court was on Tuesday informed that the remake of the 1973 blockbuster Zanjeer will hit thousands of screens overseas on Thursday and the distributors are already in possession of its prints, it suggested scriptwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar and sons of film producer Prakash Mehra find an amicable solution.
Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice M.S. Sonak were hearing the plea of Salim and Javed after Justice S.J. Kathawala refused to grant any interim relief by staying the release of the film on Monday. “Why don’t you (plaintiffs and defendants) sit for two minutes and settle the matter? We will give an opportunity to break the ice for two minutes,” said Justice Chandrachud.
To the court’s suggestion, one of the counsels for the defendants said, “You (plaintiffs) will get money to withdraw the suit without accepting rights in your favour.”
Appearing for the plaintiffs, former advocate general Ravi Kadam, said, “If I am right, I will get the order in my favour. If I am wrong, I will fail.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
