Get ready for 30 per cent water cuts on May 7 and 8
Several parts of the city will face a 30 per cent water cut on May 7 and 8, owning to the works undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to improve the water distribution network of the city. Parts of the island city and the western suburbs will bear the brunt of the water cuts.
According to civic officials, as a part of the Maroshi-Vakola-Mahim-Ruparel tunnel project, the civic body has undertaken water mains connecting works on main Vaitarana pipeline, in which the Vakola tunnel shaft, between Sahar anchor block and Bandra anchor block and other places, will be connected.
The connection works will start on May 7 at 10 am and will be completed by 4 pm the next day. For this, the main Vaitarana pipeline will have to be kept closed for 30 hours.
During these works, 30 per cent water cuts will be imposed on A, C, D, G/north and G/south wards in the island city and H/west ward in the western suburbs. Areas like Colaba, Fort, Marine Lines, Bhuleshwar, Crawford Market, Dhobi Talao, Grant Road, Tardeo, Girgaum, Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar, Mahalaxmi, Nana Chowk, Dadar, Mahim, Prabhadevi, Worli, Santa Cruz, Juhu, Versova will also face water supply with low pressure and for a lesser period, said civic officials. The estimated cost to build the 10-km long tunnel is about `313 crore.
The civic officials have appealed the local residents to store sufficient water and use it judiciously.
