Gates’ NGO aids BMC in TB drive
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), an NGO that supports initiatives in education, health and population, has lent a helping hand to the BMC in its anti-TB drive in the city.
The officials of BMGF and the BMC on Wedne-sday signed a memorandum of understanding with each other at the civic headquarters. Acco-rding to civic officials, apart from giving funds, the BMGF will also provide technical support to the BMC in its anti-TB drive. The BMC is the first civic body in the country to have a tie-up with the BMGF in the health sector.
Municipal commissioner Sita-ram Kunte said, “The BMGF will strengthen the Mumbai District Tuberculosis Control Society by forming a technical support gro-up. They will also help the BMC increase the private sector participation in the TB control drive.”
The BMC is also planning to start a helpline under its anti-TB drive. Ac-cording to civic officials, since TB treatment goes on for a long period, the helpline will help patients with counselling and guidance.
The civic body is planning to appoint expert doctors and counsellors for this drive.
“The main aim of this project is to reduce the number of TB patients in the city. The BMGF will provide an aid of `70 lakh for a period of three years to the BMC,” said Giren-dra Bihari, director, BMGF India.
