Garbage dumping becomes a menace for residents
Residents of the Milap Nagar area in Dombi-vali are embroiled in an almost daily struggle with stench and pollution, as miscreants have been dumping garbage and burning it near the popular residential area.
“Almost every night, the garbage is dumped and we suspect it is the handiwork of contractors who dispose of the waste generated by the chemical and other companies in the nearby MIDC area. The contractors collect the waste and dump it on the Kalyan Shil Road, adjoining the colony.
“The waste is then burned and all the smoke drifts to the colony, causing severe inconvenience to residents alongside polluting our environment,” said Raju Nalawade, a Dombivali-based environment activist who is also the president of the Milap Nagar residents’ association.
Apart from several housing societies, the elite Asian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) hospital is also located in the same area, and the smoke also affects the patients there.
Besides contractors, villagers from the 27 villages along the Kalyan Shil Road also dump their garbage on the road.
The Milap Nagar residents have now written to the MSRDC, requesting that steps be taken.
When contacted, MSRDC executive engineer P.D. Kulkarni said, “We are aware of the problem and have even had several meetings with the gram panchayats of the villages, asking them not to dump their garbage there. We have also put up boards along the road, saying that dumping garbage is prohibited by law, but they do not seem to have any effect.”
