Gangrape: Voice technology to cement proof
Scientists of the Gandhinagar Forensic Laboratory in Gujarat will use a new voice analysis forensic technology in the investigation of the gangrape case. Two female forensic experts from the state, along with a separate team of CBI forensic
analysts from New Delhi visited the Shakti Mills compound on Tuesday afternoon to collect more samples.
Called the Voice Layered Analysis (VLA) — exclusively available with the Gujarat lab in the country — involves identifying difference in the tone at different stages of the accused’s interrogation. This helps in indicating whether the accused is being evasive. “First, the samples of the voice are taken during a normal and a casual interaction and next during a serious interrogation when the accused is being questioned about the crime. The standard ‘deviation’ is noted which points towards whether the accused is hiding something or possibly even lying. However, this is only a tool for investigation and cannot serve as evidence in the court,” explained joint CP Himanshu Roy. The test was conducted on the five accused at the crime branch unit 3 office on Tuesday.
The accused were also taken to JJ Hospital for collecting their DNA samples that will be matched with other samples collected from the spot and the victim’s vaginal smears to prove their involvement in the rape. “All the accused will also be sent for bone ossification test to prove they are majors by age to prevent a later possibility of them claiming otherwise in court. This will lead to the case falling apart,” said a crime branch officer. A potency test was also conducted with the same intent on Monday.
The police has also recovered clothes and undergarments of the accused from their residences from which samples will be taken for DNA and forensic tests. Semen samples from their clothes and the victim will be match to prove their involvement in the rape.
