FYJC offline admissions to also be centralised soon
The state school education ministry will be centralising offline admissions to FYJC from the next academic year. A commitment to this effect was given by minister of state for school education Fauziya Khan to a students’ organisation that met her on Wednesday regarding meritorious students not getting admission to colleges of their choice, though they were eligible for the same.
According to Amol Matele, president of the Mumbai unit of National Student Congress, a protest was taken out by their organisation against the problems faced by students in the FYJC online admission process. During their meeting with Ms Khan to appraise her of the problems faced by students belonging to the economically backward class (EBC) sections, Mr Matele also raised other issues. “Apart from EBC students being forced to take admission in unaided colleges as allocated to them through the online admission system, which they cannot afford, we also pointed out the flaws in the admission process, which resulted in meritorious students not getting admissions in the colleges of their choice. These students were then forced to buy management quota seats in the same college during the offline admission process,” said Mr Matele. Ms Khan assured the NSC delegates that the government would ensure that the students are not forced to shell out more.
“She also told us that the government would take steps to curb it by centalising the offline process,” said Mr Matele. “The same is expected to be implemented from the next academic year,” a source from Ms Khan’s office said.

Age Correspondent
Mumbai, Aug. 7
Vihari Poddar, arrested by the DRI for allegedly smuggling `2.35 crore diamonds in her undergarments at the Mumbai airport last week, filed a bail application in the sessions court on Wedn-esday. The metropolitan magistrate court rejected her bail application last week. On Thursday, the sessions court will hear arguments by Poddar’s and the DRI’s lawyers before passing a judgment at a later date. Following a tip-off, DRI officers had intercepted Poddar at the airport, while she was attempting to exit through the green channel. Officers also claimed that she had made around 20 such trips between Singapore and Mumbai in the last two years, and is suspected to have smuggled diamonds and dutiable jewellery. The duty evaded by Poddar is expected to be around `89.5 lakh.
