Failed affair angle being probed in cop son’s suicide
The Tilak Nagar police is exploring a possible broken love affair angle in the suicide case of Tejas (21), son of crime branch senior PI Arvind Sawant.
The police, however, clarified that nothing concrete had emerged since a detailed statement of the family was still to be recorded. Tejas shot himself with his father’s service pistol early on Wednesday morning.
Additional commissioner of police Quaiser Khalid said, “We sent some of our officers to the family’s residence on Thursday, but they were performing some religious rites. They are still grieving and haven’t come out of the shock; it would be insensitive to question them at this stage. We are also yet to talk to Tejas’ friends to know if he shared any of his problems with them. We can only come to conclusions after statements are
recorded.”
A source close to the investigation, however, said that Tejas also wanted to take admission in Kirti College. He was studying at DG Ruparel College in Matunga. “It is possible that the girl might have been studying in Kirti College, which is why he wanted to shift. His friends can confirm this fact. His WhatsApp status message ‘One day..no more..forever..miss me,’ is also a clue, but we need to find out the context in which he wrote it. Currently, there are two possibilities — an argument within the family or a love affair,” added the officer.
Incidentally, Tejas updated his WhatsApp status around 24 hours before the incident.
An officer from the crime branch unit-3, which is headed by Tejas’ father Arvind, said that the officer looked normal and “cheerful” the previous day. “He did not show any signs of stress or tension and all of us even enjoyed lunch together. He never spoke about his family tension at work,” he said.
When contacted, DCP Mahesh Ghurye refused to comment on the issue.
Meanwhile, the police is also awaiting the ballistic reports of the Glock 9 mm pistol — used by Tejas to shoot himself — from the forensic laboratory in Kalina.
