‘Errant contractors must be reined in’
In an attempt to rein in erring contractors, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has demanded that 50 per cent of their bill amount should be held back till the guarantee period of their work is over.
According to MNS corporator Sandeep Deshpande, the civic development work like road constructions have been greatly
affected due to the shoddy work by the contractors. Holding back half of their bills would be an effective way to ensure quality work, he said.
Civic sources claim that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation spends crores of rupees on road constructions and repairs. Despite this, it has failed to provide good quality roads. Even though the defence liability period is pending, roads continue to be in bad shape with numerous potholes. While the onus to repair these roads lies on the contractors, they do not do their work efficiently due to the lenient approach of the administration.
“To prevent such irregularities and to rein in erring contractors, a performance bank guarantee is taken from contractors in some of the western countries. We have decided that 50 per cent amount of the contractors’ bills should be held back till the guarantee period of their work is not over,” said Mr Deshpande.
The MNS corporator has participated in several agitations against the contractors for the bad state of roads.
