Drunk driving: One hurt in hit-and-run
A cyclist was injured after a motorist rammed into him in Versova in the early hours of Monday. The accused subsequently resisted arrest before he was taken into custody, and he was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. The police said the accused was the son of an ex-police officer.
According to the Versova police, the incident occurred at around 1.20 am on Monday at the Swami Samarth Chowk in Versova. Andheri resident Ramprakash Singh (33) was on his way home when a speeding Ford Endeavour hit him. The impact of the collision threw Ramprakash off his bicycle and injured him. However, the car did not stop, and sped away from the scene. However, an eyewitness to the accident gave chase on his motorcycle and as soon as the car stopped at the Four Bungalows circle, he raised an alarm. Residents of the area then surrounded the driver and the police control room was informed.
“The driver, identified as Paramdeep Singh (41) resisted arrest and got into a scuffle with our officers. He was eventually overpowered and taken to the Cooper Hospital to be subjected to medical tests. However, he refused to let the doctors take samples and was ultimately subjected to a physical examination, after which the doctors certified him inebriated,” said Nandkumar Mhetar, senior police inspector, Versova police station.
Paramdeep was subsequently placed under arrest and charged
with causing injury due to rash and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol as well as for obstructing a government servant from discharging his duty. He claims to be a film producer and is the son of a retired Indian police service (IPS) officer.
