Cops crack whip on Expressway offenders

In a bid to arrest the increasing number of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, traffic policemen have booked at least 3,762 heavy vehicles on the accident-prone zone, and collected `4,17,400 in fines. This was done as part of a 10-day drive, which started on March 30.

Officials have also been distributing pamphlets on traffic discipline and road safety at the various toll nakas on the Expressway, along with constant announcements on speakers.

The Expressway has four traffic aid posts (TAPs) at Palaspe, Borghat, Khandala and Wadgaon. While, the Palaspe TAP has registered 324 cases and collected `34,900 in fines till Sunday afternoon, The Borghat TAP has registered 728 cases with `1,11,900 in fines. “Earlier, we would catch atleast 100 offenders everyday, but the number has now come down to around 50,” said assistant police inspector Shivaji Mane.

While heavy vehicles are fined `700 for lane violation, rash driving invites anywhere between `500 to `600, as per provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The Khandala TAP too has registered 710 cases with a total fine amount of `70,600. API Subhash Randive said that the number of offenders reduced to 70 to 80 per day from the initial 120 to 150 since the drive began. The Wadgaon TAP, which is the last on the Expressway towards Pune, has the highest number with around 2,000 cases and around `2,50,000 in fines.

Additional director general of police (Highways and Traffic) Vijay Kamble said, “The drive only targeted heavy vehicles, which break lanes on the Expressway, since it is a six lane highway making the problem more acute,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
