Cops bust highway robbers’ gang, arrest 5
The Delhi police on Sunday claimed to have busted a gang of interstate highway robbers with the arrest of five persons. The accused have been identified as Amit, alias Prem Singh, 20, Aman Sharma, 20, Sushil Kumar, 22, Ajay Kumar, 23, and Yogesh Kumar, 20, all residents of Sonepat, Haryana.
The police received a complaint on June 6 about a robbery in Alipur area of outer Delhi.
“Four youth hired a cab (Maruti Eco) for going to Bakhtawarpur village in Delhi from the Old Delhi Railway Station. When they reached near Bakhtawarpur, one accused requested the driver to stop the car on the pretext of attending nature’s call. As the driver stopped the vehicle, the youth overpowered him and attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon. They robbed his cash, mobile phone and car and dumped him on the road,” said the police.
On Saturday, the police got a tip-off that Amit, who is said to be the gang leader, would come to meet gang members at the parking of Gurdwara Majnu Ka Tila in Timarpur to hatch another plan. A trap was laid and the five robbers were nabbed. With their arrest, the police claimed to have solved around half a dozen cases of robbery in Delhi and NCR region.
“All the accused belong to lower middle class and are unemployed. Amit leads the group. He uses a gandasa (axe-like weapon) to attack victims and was wanted in several cases. He also committed theft in a jewellery shop in Kerala in 2011,” said the police.
Accused Aman is pursuing his B.Com. IInd year from Sir Chhotu Ram College, Sonepat. He has no previous criminal record and his father runs a motorcycle repair shop in Sonepat.
