Cops to award crew that has best boat

The Mumbai police wants its boats, that were acquired after the lessons learnt post 26/11 attacks, to be maintained well, and for this, it will pit its crew against each other. The motor transport department of the city police has announced that the boat found in the most sparkling and workable condition will invite a reward for its crew.
The 14 boats, including four small speedboats, have been taken off waters for the annual maintenance works and paint jobs. “We held a meeting on Tuesday with the staff at the jetty near Sewri, where the competition was announced. The friendly contest will spur the men to work more sincerely and put in their best. Most importantly, the vessels, being of sophisticated foreign make, need additional care and attention. The only way to ensure good workmanship is to make the crew vie for a prize,” said DCP (motor transport) Atul Patil.
The meeting that was held on Tuesday, also saw representatives from two companies, Marine Frontier and Goa Shipyard, to discuss issues regarding supply of spare parts and other technical aspects of the boats. “We have begun a specialised training session for the men under the firms’ engineers, who will provide the technical know-how and the general knowledge on how to resolve complicated break downs. The boats will now be repainted, cleaned, oiled and their engines will be serviced to ensure longer life,” added DCP Patil.
The Mumbai police had specially recruited 245 men from the koli community to man the boats because of their sea faring history and acclimatisation to the marine life. “We have already had some of our regular police staff
vomiting and fainting due to sea sickness, but the kolis seem to be hardwired to live on the seas,” added an officer.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
