CM: Panel to help expedite project

A team of high-ranking officers will be formed to monitor and expedite the process of the ambitious elevated corridor projects in the city, CM Prithviraj Chavan declared on Monday.
Railway officers gave a presentation to the state government on the three elevated projects — Oval to Virar, CST to Panvel and Virar to Panvel. “In order to grant all the necessary help for the ambitious elevated projects, a team will be formed comprising high-ranking officers,” said Mr Chavan.
The team will help in better coordination between the state government and the Railways.
Vinay Mittal, chairman, Railway Board made a presentation in a meeting, which was attended by the CM, state finance minister Jayant Patil, industrial minister Narayan Rane and others. The travel time between CST and Panvel might be curtailed to 35 minutes on the proposed elevated corridor on the Harbour Line as against the present 77 minutes. An official from the Railways said that as per the CM’s instructions, the chairman has asked Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to reduce the travelling time between the two destinations. Earlier, the techno-feasibility study by Rail Indian Technical and Economic Services (RITES) had estimated a travel time of 45 minutes on the elevated corridor.
The elevated corridors will be 15 to 10 metres high at places. It has been planned, as the suburban section is saturated. When fully-constructed, fully air-conditioned local trains are likely to ply on this corridor. Officers said that there would be less acquisition issues while constructing the elevated corridors. Moreover, railway authorities expect 30 per cent of the current local train traffic and 20 per cent of the road traffic to shift to the elevated corridors.
A presentation on the Mumbai-Pune-Nagpur proposed high-speed corridor was also made.
