Civic corporators get pay hike
A windfall awaits the corporators, as their honourarium will now rise from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000. They are also likely to get a substantial hike of up to `1.10 crore in their civic development funds.
The notice of motion tabled by standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale to prov
ide `25,000 honourarium to corporators every month was approved unanimously in the civic house on Tuesday. The proposal will now be sent to the state urban development department for approval.
“An honorarium of Rs 10,000 is too low in today’s circumstances, and it has to be increased. With additional development funds, corporators will be able to carry out more development works in their wards,” said standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale.
According to BMC sources, the civic development funds will also be hiked from the existing Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1.10 crore each for 232 corporators (227 elected and five nominated). A proposal regarding this will be tabled before the standing committee on Wednesday. This is expected to put an annual burden of `116 crore on the civic exchequer.
Earlier, corporators only got Rs 35 lakh as civic development funds. An additional fund of Rs 1 crore was introduced for them in the year 2007, during the tenure of standing committee chairman Ravindra Waikar. However, former civic chief Subodh Kumar decided to do away with these funds, citing the weak economic position of the civic body last year. He, however, agreed to increase the regular funds from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 60 lakh.
In addition to this, corporators also get Rs 400 as attendance allowance for every house general body and civic committee meeting, a laptop and free travel in BEST buses. There is also a proposal to provide them with Android cellphones.
While deciding to provide more civic development funds, the civic body may have to scrap its earlier decision to appoint a panel of architects for the planned development of slum areas.
According to sources, in lieu of additional development funds, the civic body had decided to prepare a development plan to meet the infrastructure needs of slums in the suburbs and house gullies in the city area. However, if funds of Rs 1.10 crore are distributed to each corporator, the plan is likely to be scrapped as the funds would have to be diverted, said a civic official.
