Cards in Borivali ATM cloned
The Borivali police is on the lookout for unknown cyber criminals who have stolen a collective amount of `4.32 lakh from several ATM centers across Mumbai on August 5. The police believes that a skimming device might have been used to clone debit cards, which were then used to withdraw the stolen amount.
Earlier, Bulgarian nationals allegedly used a skimming device in June to withdraw `15 lakh from an ATM centre in Colaba. The money belonged to 40 persons including policemen. More such cases were reported subsequently.
The Borivali police on Monday was flooded with 13 victims who stated that some unidentified person had withdrawn money from their accounts. Explaining the modus operandi an officer said, “The gang must have fitted the skimming device on August 3 inside an ATM located near Kora Kendra in Borivali (west). They must have copied the data on the skimming device and then used it to clone cards.”
“We have asked for the CCTV footage of the ATM centre to check who all visited the centre that day. The money has been withdrawn from several places like Lalbaug, Marine Drive, Andheri etc,” he added.
Senior police inspector, Narayan Khaire of Borivali police station, said, “Most of them have their accounts with SBI while others have accounts in different private banks.”
Sub-inspector, Suresh P. Salunkhe said, “Some has lost 20,000, others have lost between 40,000 to 60,000.”
