Car thieves hurt 2 cops in getaway
The police has launched a manhunt for four car thieves who, while trying to evade arrest, rammed a stolen car into a police bike, injuring two police constables.
According to the Mahim police, constable S. Chandgude, was on night patrol in Pitambari lane on Kataria Road when he spotted four persons breaking into a Hyundai Santro
and tried to stop them. However, the thieves managed to flee with the car before he could get to them. Mr Chandgude then issued an alert on his wireless, giving the description of the car and its registration number.
A short distance ahead on the same road, constables Dhaneshwar Jangam and Vilas Ganeshkar were patrolling the street on a police motorcycle, and on hearing the alert, began travelling toward the scene of crime. Seeing the stolen car approaching, Mr Jangam, who was driving, steered the motorcycle into the path of the car.
“Instead of stopping, or even turning to avoid hitting it, the thieves hit the bike head-on and sped away toward Shivaji Park. Both Mr Jangam and Mr Ganeshkar were thrown
off the bike. They were rushed to Bhabha Hospital, where they were admitted with several injuries to
their legs,” said an officer with the Mahim police station.
The police has contacted nearby police stations and circulated the stolen car’s make and registration number to everyone. Repeat offenders who have a record of automobile thefts are also being rounded up and questioned, the officer added.
