Brimstowad project hit by p.a.p. rehab
The rehabilitation of project affected persons (PAPs) continues to remains a stumbling block in the BMC’s ambitious river widening project, which has already been delayed by seven years.
After the 26/7 deluge in 2005, the BMC had undertaken a river widening project (Bri-mstowad) to improve the water carrying capacity of the five rivers — Mithi, Dahi-sar, Poisar, Oshiwara and Vakola. The project included widening of rivers and construction of protection walls around them. However, the issue of rehabilitating slumdwellers residing in the vicinity of these rivers has proved to be a major obstacle for the BMC.
According to civic officials, slums built before the year 2000 are eligible for rehabilitation under the project. The civic body has 3,000 tenements ready for PAPs in Mahul. However, the collectorate office is yet to provide the list of eligible slumdwellers, due to which the rehabilitation of over 5,000 PAPs has been delayed. This has affected the project, a senior civic official said.
Additional municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta said, “The authority, which controls the land near river and nullahs has the responsibility of determining the eligibility of PAPs.”
