BMC turns to chutes for garbage collection
Filthy building and house gullies may soon be a thing of the past, as the BMC is planning to implement the garbage chute project in the city.
Under this project, garbage chutes will be installed at every staircase of buildings, from where garbage will be collected in dustbins placed at ground floor.
Garbage chutes are common in high-rise apartment buildings and are used to collect waste from all apartments in one place. Often, the bottom end of the chute is placed directly above a large waste holder. This makes garbage collection more efficient.
According to civic officials, narrow gullies between buildings are places where residents very often dump garbage and left over food. However, these places have always been difficult for the civic body to clean, as they are difficult to access. This problem is severe in south Mumbai, where most buildings are located close to each other, with only narrow lanes between them.
“Constant accumulation of garbage in turn leads to rise in the number of rats and bandicoots, making the situation conducive for epidemics. These chutes will ensure that dumped waste is collected only in
dustbins, which will reduce the epidemic threat,”
said Rahul Shewale
standing committee chairman.
According to architect Pankaj Joshi, the garbage chute will be a viable option for housing societies given the dwindling number of conservancy workers.
Mr Shewale said, the BMC has a made a token provision of `25 lakh for the project, which will be first implemented on pilot basis in D ward. The ward has several high-density areas like Grant Road, Tardeo, Girgaum and Nana Chowk.
