BMC starts demolishing illegal lift at Wankhede
Following the failure of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to provide proper legal documents, the BMC on Thursday started demolishing an unauthorised lift that was being constructed at the Wankhede Stadium.
According to civic sources, initial documents submitted to the civic building proposal department did not contain any permission regarding the lift.
Additional municipal commissioner M.M. Adtani said, “We had given 24 hours to the MCA to submit the necessary documents to install the lift. As the deadline expired at 2 pm on Thursday, we directed officials to carry out the demolition.”
The cross girders of the 14.5 metre high lift were removed on Thursday. The remaining portion will be demolished on Friday.
When contacted, MCA vice-president Ratnakar Shetty said, “I’m not aware of the developments as I’m currently in Delhi.”

Shetty charged under Mcoca in Kidnap case
Age correspondent
Mumbai, April 12
The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA)
court on Thursday invoked the stringent MCOCA against gangster Santosh Shetty for allegedly kidnapping a father and son duo from Mumbai in 2010. Shetty was subsequently remanded to judicial custody till April 24 by the court.
“The complainants need to formally identify the accused, and hence, we sought judicial custody of the accused. The court has invoked the MCOCA charges against Shetty,” said special public prosecutor Dilip Shah.
Shetty, under the assumed identity of Nick Sharma, approached businessman Gopal Dadiya and assured him a load of `21 lakh from Bangkok, which he needed as capital to expand his pharmaceutical company.
However, Shetty asked Gopal and his son Monish to come to visit him in Bangkok in order to complete some formalities.
Once there, the duo
was held captive to a ransom of `15 crore, which was later lowered to `5 crore. Shetty later released them.
“The Anti-Extortion Cell had registered a complaint against Shetty earlier in March this year,” said Mr Shah.
