BMC sets Aug. 25 deadline for filling all potholes in city
Taking note of the inconvenience caused to commuters due to potholes, the BMC has decided to repair potholes on roads belonging to other agencies, like the MMRDA and PWD, if they fail they to repair it by August 25.
Additional municipal commissioner S.V.R. Sriniwas said, “We have decided to do this so that people do not face any inconvenience. After completion of repair works, we will send the bills to concerned agencies and recover the repair cost from them.”
The civic body has summoned officials of the MMRDA, PWD, Mumbai Port Trust and MSRDC to discuss the pothole issue in the standing committee meeting. This monsoon, over 513 potholes were reported on roads belonging to other agencies, of which 192 are on MMRDA roads and 48 on PWD roads.
The MSRDC official assured the civic body that all the potholes on its roads would be filled within a couple of days. The PWD official said that mobile units have been stationed on its roads to ensure that pothole-filling is done at the earliest. Mr Sriniwas said, “We will hold a meeting with these agency officials next week to discuss technical aspects of the pothole-repair programme. We have asked them to repair all the potholes by August 25. If they miss the deadline, the BMC will carry out the works on its own.”
In the meeting, corporators also made various suggestions to ensure effective pothole-filling work.
Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Korgaonkar said, “The BMC should check whether any action can be taken against these agencies under the Disaster Act for failing to repair potholes on their roads and causing inconvenience to people.”
Congress corporator Pravin Chheda said that instead of putting blame on other agencies, the BMC should take strict action against its contractors.
