BMC to increase Thane water supply
Faced with protests from residents of the Thane district, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has finally agreed to increase their water supply. Following complaints from the locals, Mayor Sunil Prabhu said, “We have assured them that the pipeline supplying water to their villages will soon be enlarged to ensure a rise in water supply,” .
The civic body had organised a tour to the Modak Sagar and Tansa lakes supplying water to the city. Protesters, however, blocked the mayor’s convoy and said that they would continue to agitate until their demands are met.
A resident of Pise, Megha Jadhav, said, “We have sacrificed our lands for the BMC’s plant, but we still have to pay for the BMC water, which is always turbid.” However, civic officials have denied that the dirty water supply was due to problems in their network, stating that water collected from Pise village was taken to Panjrapur, from where 40 villages are supplied treated water.
Mr Prabhu said that their job was to supply the water, and it was the responsibility of the panchayat to treat it. He, however, confirmed that the supply would be increased.
The BMC in all supplies water to 146 villages, which falls in civic water distribution network.
