BJP leader resigns post rape charges
Senior BJP leader and spokesperson Madhu Chavan resigned from the party on Friday after an FIR was filed against him in an alleged rape case. Party state unit chief Devendra Fadnavis has accepted his resignation.
In his resignation letter, Chavan said that the allegations levelled against him were baseless and false. “I have full confidence in our legal system and [I am] hopeful that I will come out clean. But until then I don’t [want] to remain on any post of the party. So offering my resignation (sic).”
Accepting his resignation, Mr Fadnavis said, “Yes, I had received his resignation, which was accepted. Now, the law will take its own course.”
A rape case was registered at the Kala Chowki police station late on Tuesday night by a woman, who has alleged that she was in a relationship with the former MLA for the past 20 years, and that he had not fulfilled his promise to marry her.
The woman is a former office-bearer in the state BJP, but she left the party at the time of BMC elections last year and is now an office-bearer of another regional party in Maharashtra.
In her complaint to the police, she has claimed that since 1993, after she came in contact with Chavan during party meetings, she was in a relationship with him. The woman has said that Chavan had been sexually exploiting her since then on the pretext of marriage. Chavan was charged under Section 376 of the IPC (for rape).
Chavan is known to be a loyal RSS activist and is from the Ratnagiri district of the Konkan region. He has been an active politician since the days of the Jan Sangh party and was the vice-president of BJP in Maharashtra in 1995.
