Babus renting out official flats in soup
IAS and IPS rank officers might soon face action for giving their government allotted flats out on rent. Home minister R.R. Patil assured the state Assembly that the government would prepare a list of flats allotted to senior bureaucrats who had given their flats on rent and initiate action against them.
The home minister said that the flats were allotted to IAS and IPS officers for accommodation, but there were complaints that officers were renting out these flats. “The issue is not pertaining to the home department. However, the housing department will probe as to how many flats given to these senior officers were being rented out without intimating the government. Action will also be initiated against such officers,” Mr Patil said.
MNS legislator Mangesh Sangle has raised the issue of the sex racket busted at a flat in Mira Housing Society at Oshiwara by the social service branch of the Mumbai police. The society was made for IAS and IPS officers. Mr Sangle said, “The land was allotted by the government to IAS and IPS for accommodation, but these officers have used the flats for criminal activities, which is a very serious thing.”
Mr Sangle demanded stern action against the senior officer, which was supported by senior MNS legislator Bala Nandgaonkar, BJP legislator Nana Patole and others.
In his reply, the home minister clarified that flat no 1402, where the racket was busted, belongs to one Chandrakant Kulkarni, who is a resident of Pune and not a government official. “Mr Kulkarni had given his flat to Softcorn Software Company, and the company had given the flat to Imtiyaz Shaikh for care taking. Shaikh was found to have been running the flesh trade,” Mr Patil said.
