Alert biker helps nab tempo driver

An alert biker got a tempo driver arrested almost a month after his vehicle rammed into a bike and killed one person and injured another on Lalbaug bridge. The Bhoiwada police has arrested the accused and seized his tempo.
The arrested accused has been identified as Imran Khan Tahir Khan (24). According to the police, on May 27 at around 2.45 am, when Imran was driving his tempo in the north direction on Lalbaug flyover, he dashed into a bike opposite India United Mills-1. The bike skid and two people on it, who were later identified as Aarif Ajjan Khan (35) and Mohammed Sanu Afzal Ahmed (28) sustained grievous injuries.
“Sameer Dighe (name changed as he is the prime witness in the case) was at the accident spot. He followed the tempo and tried to intercept it, but the tempo driver dodged his vehicle and tried to dash into Sameer’s bike too. Hence, Sameer had to slow down his bike and the tempo driver then managed to flee. But, showing good presence of mind, Sameer noted down the tempo’s registration number and informed police about the incident,” said PSI Ravindra Hodge of Bhoiwada police station.
Meanwhile, Aarif and Sanu Afzal were rushed to KEM Hospital where doctors declared Aarif dead and admitted Ahmed to hospital. Bhoiwada police registered an offence under Sections 279, 338, 304 (A), 427 of IPC and 134 (A) (B) of Mumbai Police Act against the unknown driver of tempo 6237. Details of the tempo, as described by Sameer, were circulated on wireless and the RTO’s help was also sought.
“On June 21 we received information that the tempo was spotted on Dr BA Road opposite Laxmi Cottage building in Parel. We immediately tracked it down and nabbed its driver Imran Khan. The police questioned Imran’s helper Haider Husain (28), who too corroborated that Imran had rammed into the bike on the bridge. Subsequently, Imran was placed under arrest,” said another officer.
