After 6 yrs, Naac gives MU an ‘A’
Six years after its accreditation was considered invalid, the University of Mumbai finally managed to get it renewed, with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Naac) declaring it a grade “A” university on Saturday.
The University had not bothered to renew its accreditation, till the issue was raised in the legislative Assembly in 2010. The Naac peer committee visited the University in March this year, and after judging the University on various parameters gave it an A.
While University officials were happy with the grading, sources say that the various goof-ups in the past year, resulted in a drop in the points, with the University managing a 3.05, which is even lower than Pune University.
With an eye to maintain the quality of education across all institutions offering higher and technical education in the country, the Central government had set-up the Naac in 1994, to grade institutions. The grading has since then been compulsory for all institutions, failing which the University Grants Commission (UGC) can cancel its affiliation to the institution.
When contacted Dr Naresh Chandra, pro-vice-chancellor, MU said, “There is scope for improvement and the University will spare no efforts to improve its facilities.”

NO MEGA BLOCKS ON BOTH CR, WR ROUTES TODAY
AGE CORRESPONDENT
MUMBAI, APRIL 21
Passengers on Central Railway (CR), who have been grappling with inordinate delays and over-crowded trains, will have some respite as authorities will not operate a mega block on Sunday.
“No mega block will be operated on CST Mumbai-Kalyan main line, CST Mumbai-Panvel Harbour line and Thane-Vashi/Nerul Trans Harbour line,” said on official press release. Western Railway will also not operate the routine mega block on its lines.
CR managed to run 97 per cent of its trains on Saturday. The signal restoration work on the affected stretch in Kurla also gained progress on Saturday. “We restored the double yellow and green signals on Saturday. Earlier, we could run trains only on yellow signals,” said a CR officer.
Meanwhile, a brawl ensued between a CR booking clerk and a 27-year-old doctor over issuance of the monthly ticket pass. The booking clerk Joshua D’Souza allegedly refused to change the destination in the ticket, as it had already been printed.
The GRP police later registered a non-cognisable offence against the booking clerk.
