Acid thrown on 23-yr-old Delhi girl’s face
An unknown man attacked a 23-year-old girl from New Delhi with acid just after she got down from a passenger train at Bandra railway terminus with her father and relatives on Thursday morning.
According to the government railway police at Bandra, the incident took place at around 8.05 am, when the victim Pratibha (name changed) had just alighted from the train on platform number 3.
Pratibha was with her father, aunt and uncle. The assailant came from behind and tapped on Pratibha’s shoulder. When she turned around, the man threw acid on her face and body. Her three relatives who were next to her also suffered burn injuries.
The assailant managed to escape from the spot before anyone could raise an alarm. Pratibha was rushed to Bhabha Hospital from where she was shifted to Guru Nanak Hospital and finally to Masina Hospital, where she is being treated for the burn injuries in the ICU. The girl is a BSc graduate and had come to Mumbai from New Delhi to work as a nurse with Indian Naval Hospital Ship Asvini at Colaba. Whether the assailant is known to the victim is not yet clear.
“The victim came here in the Garib Rath Express. The assailant was seen moving around in the train with the acid bottle by her uncle in Surat, Gujarat. The assailant has left behind the bottle and we will be sending it to the forensic lab,” said senior police inspector Vijay Dhopavkar of Bandra railway police station.
Medical director of Masina Hospital, Dr Rohinton Dastur said, “The girl is stable medically, but she had to be kept on the ventilator. Her face is almost defaced and she has also lost vision in her right eye.”
