ACB in quandary about arrested architect’s assets
A day after arresting state high-rise committee member Shailesh Mahimtura, officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau are facing technical problems in assessing the value of his assets. According to ACB sources, the chief problem is that Mahimtura, apart from being a public servant, is also an architect in the private sector. “If we assess the value of his property, it will be difficult to ascertain how much property he amassed while discharging his duties as a member of the committee,” said Mr Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner of police, ACB.
An official added that the value of Mahimtura’s property could not be submitted as evidence, as he might get off the hook by claiming that it was bought using the money that he earned as an architect. Mahimtura complained of health problems in the early hours of Tuesday morning and was admitted to the Sion Hospital.
“He has been remanded to a day’s judicial custody. ACB officials will now produce him in court on Wednesday, where they will seek his custody,” Mr Kaushik said. Several builders called the ACB offices since his arrest saying that he had taken money from them as well, but no written complaint has come in yet, the police said.
