8 months on, Russell’s death still remains a mystery
More than eight months after the Costa Concordia sank off the Isola Di Giglio, claiming at least 30 lives, the fate of Indian national Russell Rebello still remains unknown. His brother Kevin is still seeking answers, even as the authorities at the site of the tragedy have suspended the search for dead bodies till the ship is fully salvaged.
The cruiseliner sank off the island on January 13, with 3,229 passengers and 1,023 crewmembers on board. Kevin, who lives in Milan, rushed to Isola Di Giglio and has since then been the pillar of support for Russell’s wife and son back home in Nallasopara. “I was recently told that the authorities are now focusing on salvaging the sunken ship. It has started to come apart after being underwater for over six months and needs to be salvaged fast. Only two people now remain to be accounted for, and Russell is unfortunately one of them,” Kevin told The Asian Age, speaking on the phone from Milan. Since the day of the sinking, Kevin made daily visits to the site, interacting with authorities, survivors and families of those lost in the tragedy.
