`70 lakh jewellery heist: Cops arrest 3 accused

The Kurla police arrested three persons in connection with the burglary on July 8 where a jewellery shop was looted of gold and cash collectively worth `70 lakh. The prime accused, apparently an employee with the same shop, had also taken away the CCTV recordings. The police has recovered around `27 lakh of the stolen booty.
Accused Umedsingh Solanki (26), along with his brother Jabbarsingh and Vijay Kamble were arrested while they were trying to sell the loot. Kamble, a resident of Navi Mumbai, had purchased some of the jewellery and therefore arrested. The accused had also gone to Karnataka and Rajasthan in a bid to sell the gold to jewellers based there. “We had been tracing them for a long time and finally zeroed in on their location in Karnataka where they were attempting to sell the remaining gold. Our officers had been camping there and laid a trap when the accused were apprehended,” said DCP (zone 5) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
The police has recovered 1.2 kg gold, 2 kg silver and cash to the tune of `27 lakh from the accused, and efforts are underway to locate the rest of the valuables. Unfortunately, the police does not have the CCTV footage as Umedsingh had been “smart enough” to take away the recording unit. The police will now have to rely on witnesses, fingerprints and other
evidences during the trial in court.
Umedsingh, who had been being hired by the owner Naveen Deopura (28), had started working at Madhuram Jewellers only eight days before committing the burglary. On the morning of the burglary, Umed reached the shop around 8 am after taking the keys from Mr Deopura and opened the doors for routine cleaning. He then packed everything and fled. The crime came to light when Mr Deopura’s wife suspected that something was amiss after Umedsingh failed to return for a long time. Interestingly, the shop is located only a stone’s throw away from the Kurla police station and the crime branch unit-5 at Kurla (west).

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
