60% quota seats already filled
The declaration of the first merit list for minority and reserved quota seats on Thursday saw nearly 60 per cent of the seats being snapped up by the students. However, principals say that students have simply rushed to secure a seat and they will probably vacate these seats once the online admission merit lists are also declared.
According to Taqi Merchant, who scored 87 per cent and is looking to take up Science (bi-focal), said that though he was confident of getting admission in RD National College, Bandra through the online admission process, he did not want to take any risks and decided to take provisional admission in Rizvi College, Bandra.
“Rather than being forced to take admission in a third-tier college, we weighed our options and decided to reserve a seat in Rizvi College,” said Taqi’s father. Other parents aired similar views after getting a seat reserved under the minority quota.
College principals, however, do not want to read too much into this rush for seats. “Many of these students will cancel their quota seat admission once they get a seat in their preferred college through the online admission process. The cancellations are expected to start from June 26, as the students
will be expected to submit their original marksheets,” said Dr M.A. Farouqui, principal, Rizvi College.
Document submissions will go on till June 23 for students who want to confirm their admission on the minority quota seat, he added.
Meanwhile, some of the institutions, especially those belonging to belonging to minority trusts run by the Sindhi community, are expected to surrender the quota seats to the education department.
